“Describe one thing about yourself that only your best friends know”

There are three ways to answer this question:

1. The boring way

  • “I’ll tell you later.”
  • “There’s a reason that only my best friends know it.”
  • “When you get to be my friend you’ll know.”

Most men and women answer with one of these three. Boooring!

2. Leave it blank

This is much better than a “just like everybody else’s” answer. After all, your match probably won’t go shortlisting you if you skipped this question.

3. Answer it as if it is a different question

  • What is the most adorable thing about you??
  • Describe yourself as a kid or as a teenager
  • Share a funny or amusing story of yourself
  • Describe an award or recognition you won.
  • If you joined a talent contest, what will you perform?
  • Describe a monicker that people call you, or used to call you.
  • Describe a hidden aspiration (or one of your three wishes)
  • Describe something that sets you apart from everyone else
  • What do you like to do in private, or when no one else is looking?
  • (A second answer to) What is the ONE thing that people DON’T notice about you right away that you WISH they WOULD?

How do you answer this question?

I give an absurd answer (which I change on a regular basis), such as:

“I play with matches” or “Me gusta queso”.

    The sillier the better.

I love profiles with outandish answers to this question, and I tend to close out the ones with generic answers unless the rest of their profile is outstanding.

Answers in category #1 really make me roll my eyes because they are just too lazy to put forth any effort and show no uniqueness. It is not that hard to come up with something unique to you that you can feel comfortable putting on your profile. I think folks tend to think this demands some sort of confession of a deep dark or embarrassing secret when it does not…

#2 usually almost always means that they have left the rest of the profile blank, which is even worse than #1.

Anything even remotely creative that is not #1 or #2 makes me a happy camper when reading a profile.

Mine is mysterious in nature and offers some insight into things that you wouldn’t typically associate with me, given what is written in the rest of my profile. The way it is phrased serves as a hook to intrigue a potential match and direct them to ask questions (and has worked as such in more than a few match conversations).
