eHarmony invites underage registrants back when they turn 21

As you know, eHarmony rejects people below 21. Those below 21 who take the personality test and register get a cryptic rejection notice entitled “Unable to match.” As evident to several blog posts in MySpace, a teenage-market social networking website, these youngsters leave eH with an impression that no member amongst 15 million in eH is suitable to them.

One of these young people, Matt, turned 21 recently and shared this on his blog:

I started an eHarmony profile over a year ago. According to eHarmony it must have been at least a year and a half ago because I was under the age of 21. I remeber filling out the exhausting personality survey for hours only to discover they couldn’t match me at the time. For whatever reason I walked away thinking that they couldn’t match me because my personality was so diverse that they just didn’t know what type of person to match me with but apparently that wasn’t the case. Just yesterday I got an email from eHarmony.com saying now that I’m over 21 they’d like me to come back and use their services. But when I relogged on I found no matches available. “Typical,” I thought. But just today I have received 5 separate emails saying eHarmony has found a new match for me.

Since eHarmony is turning 6 in two days, in theory then, there are active profiles in eHarmony that were taken from then-minors (15-18 year olds). In other words if an 18-year-old took the test in August 2000, her profile now says she’s 24 but the personality dimensions are those of an 18-year-old. We wouldn’t want to be matched with that!
