My one month on Chemistry.com and why you are better off elsewhere…

So, I have been conducting a little experiment over the past few weeks. As a special promotion to Match.com subscribers, they offered a subscription to Chemistry.com at a discounted rate. I figured, what the heck, I’ve used eHarmony for so long, let’s see what the deal is by the company that once appeared to be their most significant competition.  So, I subscribed.

Here are my observations having used it for a few weeks. I would also encourage anyone interested in trying Chemistry.com to look over the information that Gary Stock published in addition to what I’ve written here.  Between the two, I think you will decide your time and money are better invested elsewhere.

The short story:

I have been on other dating services, and my preference (the worst of the best) is "e" -- not that is the worst, but let's face it, we are like salmon trying to swim upstream. If you tell a woman you are dating you like her, she is likely to bolt. Same is true in real life (well, hey, once you mee …

You think the eHarmony magazine promotions are bad? (somewhat racy image)

This is what I got at the conclusion of a financial transaction with Match.com. The image is an actual screen capture from my browser window and has only been altered to obscure my user name. This was not a Photoshop or HTML trick.

I am really not sure what to think about it…

The first thing that comes to mind:
Do they market the equivalent magazine for women if your account gender is a female? Are they taking into account if you are seeking homosexual matching?

eHarmony interface is getting a makeover

I got an e-mail today from eHarmony detailing the changes they are about to unveil in their interface:

  1. Photos will be twice as large (that should be useful)
  2. You will be able to preview your profile (see it as your matches see it – about darned time)
  3. “Improved profile layout – improved navigation and wider format” – not sure how it will look in practice but it looks like no huge change, although better navigation would be appreciated
  4. “Fast Track is now eHarmony Mail” – it looks like “Fast Track” has just been rebranded from the screen shots (still see Icebreakers there, too).

We will have to see and wait, I guess.

Chemistry.com = epic fail?

A long time ago, in a dating galaxy far, far away from eHarmony…

…I filled out the Chemistry questionnaire and profile.

Sometime ago, I think about 6 months back, Chemistry.com started to offer free weekends, just like eHarmony, on roughly the same 6 week schedule.  So, I figured, what the heck, I’ll give it a try.  I gave it a try again, several times during each free weekend, the last one being this weekend.

During these free weekends, not one of them yielded a match going to their “open communication”.  In fact, I think maybe at best, two matches ever responded.

In my opinion, Chemistry.com just doesn’t make the grade.  It is overpriced compared to eHarmony when you look at multiple month memberships.  The website is clunkier to use: first you have to “show interest”, then you have to actually click to send your first questions.  Seriously?

Think online dating is an expensive way to meet people?

You might want to think again.

I saw part of the video attached to this story on TV.  There are many things to reflect and comment upon.

1) The matchmaking service.  Holy cow.  They are charging $15,000 for THREE dates and have a WAITING LIST?  Cripes.  How do I get in on that racket?

2) Modern dating.  Please tell me that there are at least some women that don’t operate like she does.  If this mentality is common, it does explain a lot of those “closes”.  :(

eHarmony reminds subscribers to fill out their profile

I was updating my profile yesterday and I decided to leave the last question blank (Is there anything else you want your matches to know about you)…

Lo and behold, when I went to communicate with a match, this suggestion pops up on the page of the match I am attempting to communicate with:

completeyouraboutme

Interesting.  eHarmony is now “nudging” subscribers with incomplete profiles to complete them…
